Why 50/50?
Today, despite making up 52% of the population, women remain under-represented in local and national politics. It’s simply not good enough, and it is estimated that unless radical change is pursued, it would take another 50 years for us to reach an equal parliament.
Women 5050 began in 2014 to bring the spotlight back onto women’s representation in politics and reignite the campaign led by trade unionist women during creation of the Scottish Parliament in 1999.
The Women 5050 campaign website is now no longer updated as the need for this work has changed and it is not sustainable for this to continue through unpaid volunteers. However this website remains online as an archive and to provide ready-made resources for those who are continuing this work.
Since launching, Women’s representation has become a much more central focus and there are now a number of charities and grassroots organisations delivering necessary work on supporting women candidates, advocating for change in political parties and conducting research.
